Domestication of the olive tree

Toni Gabaldón and colleagues shed light into the evolution and domestication of the olive tree, demonstrating a major domestication event, followed by recurrent independent genetic admixture events with wild populations across the Mediterranean Basin.

African swine fever virus gets a past

Martin Beer and colleagues find  elements of the African swine fever virus in the genome of soft ticks, providing insights into the evolution of this devastating swine virus and its co-development with its host.

Mutational robustness of protein structures

In a study by Marianne Rooman and Fabrizio Pucci, large-scale in silico experiments estimating the change in folding free energy upon all possible single-site mutations in more than 20,000 protein structures reveal optimization of codon usage for protein mutational robustness.

Genome-enabled insights into the biology of thrips

Dorith Rotenberg and colleagues present the genome of the invasive insect western flower thrips, providing a genetic blueprint for understanding the biology of the pest and to find ways to control it.

Crowdsourcing for new antibiotics

Marek Mutwil and colleagues used crowdsourcing to identify novel components of protein synthesis in bacteria, with 285 undergraduate students processing 26.38 terabytes of RNA-seq data, and predicting more than 100 putative regulators of protein synthesis in 17 bacterial pathogens.
