Habitat change from the last glacial maximum to the present. Since the last glacial maximum (a), patches of montane conifer forest and boreal forest (dark gray) within a matrix of mixed woodland with pinyon, oak and juniper (light gray) have given way to the present-day distribution of sky islands (b), patches of mixed pine-oak woodland (light gray) within a matrix of desertscrub, grassland or, further south in Mexico, thornscrub (white). Inset shows the current distribution of Mexican jays (shaded) and the region under study. Habitat at the last glacial maximum has been simplified for applicability to habitat requirements of Mexican jays and has been redrawn with permission from [8].
