(A) When Notch is active during mitosis, the two daughter cells are born under the influence of its activity and might lead to both siblings acquiring similar fates. (B,C) When Notch becomes active after mitosis, this frequently occurs in only one of the two daughter cells (B), but it can also occur in both siblings, although at different times (C), suggesting that these cells follow distinct developmental paths. Thus, the timing of Notch activity in relation to mitosis might be a factor that distinguishes between the different fates of daughter cells.
