Pitx mutants phenotype. In Pitx TALEN1^{+/+; +/−} larvae (a, a’), Pitx TALEN2^{+/+; +/−} larvae (c, c’), and Pitx TALEN3^{+/+; +/−} larvae (e, e’), the preoral pit and mouth are formed on the left side, with the endostyle, club-shaped gland (CSG) and first gill slit developing on the right side. Pitx TALEN1^−/− mutants show normal phenotype (b, b’). Pitx TALEN2^−/− mutants (d, d’) and Pitx TALEN3^−/− mutants (f, f’) lack a mouth opening and preoral pit on the left side, forming an endostyle and CSG on each side.
