TH activity elevation in Catsup RNAi is due to cytosolic zinc reduction. A Either Catsup RNAi or dZnT7 OE in the dopaminergic neurons significantly elevated TH activity. Genotypes of the flies used were TH-Gal4>w1118 (control), TH-Gal4>Catsup RNAi, TH-Gal4>dZnT7 OE, TH-Gal4>dZnT7 RNAi, and TH-Gal4>Catsup OE. All values are presented as mean ± SEM and included in Additional file 2: table S1; n = 4. **p < 0.01, ***p < 0.001. B DA level was elevated in Catsup RNAi and dZnT7 OE fly heads. Genotypes of the flies used were TH-Gal4>w1118 (control), TH-Gal4>Catsup RNAi, TH-Gal4>dZnT7 OE, TH-Gal4>dZnT7 RNAi, and TH-Gal4>Catsup OE. All values are presented as mean ± SEM and included in Additional file 2: table S2; n ≥ 3. ***p < 0.001. C Expression of zinc exporters enabled resistance to 3-IT, a dopamine synthesis inhibiter. Genotypes of the flies used were TH-Gal4>w1118 (control), TH-Gal4>Catsup RNAi, TH-Gal4>dZnT7 OE, and TH-Gal4>dZnT1 OE. All values are presented as mean ± SEM; n = 6. *p < 0.05, **p < 0.01, ***p < 0.001
