Principal components analysis plot of rlog transformed counts of the whole-eye transcriptome. The first principal component (PC1) accounts for 64% of the variance and clearly separates juveniles and tadpoles. Light and dark exposure are not clearly separated by PC2, which accounts for only 5% of the variance. One of the dark-exposed, juvenile samples was found to be an outlier and was removed prior to this analysis but is shown in Additional file 1: Fig. S1. The PC values are available in Additional file 3
