Summary of comparative gene expression of previously known C. intestinalis vPNS genes between invertebrate chordates. Results of in situ hybridization are summarized for genes first described in Ciona intestinalis. Expression in ventral midline (VML) or both dorsal and ventral midlines (DVML) is represented in light blue in the schematic representation of late gastrula and mid tailbud ascidian embryos. Expression in ESNs is represented by purple dots in the schematic late tailbud ascidian embryos. Expression in the ventral neurogenic field in other species is represented as a light blue circle, expression in ESNs as a purple circle, expression in both as a light blue circle with purple stripes, and lack of expression in vPNS tissues as a red circle.
