A putative evolutionary model for the TIC55 gene in Pyrus. The tandem duplication that includes the 12-bp insertion in TIC55 is only present in Asian pear accessions. Compared to European pears, peaches, and sweet cherries, Asian pears are known to have a relatively slower rate of fruit softening accompanied by a relatively long storage life. Thus, it is likely that the 12-bp insertion in TIC55 contributes to delayed fruit softening
