Schematic of tumor cell adaptation to changing microenvironments. Osteosarcoma cells demonstrate high transcriptional heterogeneity (colors) in cell culture, orthotopic tibia, and lung microenvironments. Tumors that grow in the orthotopic tibia lesions follow dynamics of neutral evolution where different cancer clones (shapes) co-exist and propagate simultaneously. The selective pressure of lung colonization results in enrichment of clonal families with different phenotypes (colors), where cells belonging to the same family (shape) tend to have similar phenotypes (color)
