Separate biases are computed as a function of the absolute distance between the orientation of the stimulus at the location of interest and the average orientation of the ensemble (e.g., for “close” distances, the stimulus had an orientation near the oblique; for “far” distances, the stimulus had an orientation away from the oblique)
