An organismal response to perception of food. Environmental polypeptides sensed by chemosensation leads to increased synthesis and secretion of the insulin-like peptide DAF-28, activating IIS. Additional, unknown pathways are also altered, which together with activated IIS affects gene expression and lipid metabolism. These physiological changes prime the animal for feeding and development, but they are deleterious if the animal does not actually feed
