There are two non-genetic influences on particle phenotype (cell size in this example) in our model: developmental instability, a stochastic effect that varies a particle’s phenotype from its genetic mean (with standard deviation σ), and environmental effects, which modify the phenotype of all particles in a collective by the same amount (with standard deviation σ′)
