Schematic representation of the major comparisons in this study. We examined how expression profiles change in early and later embryogenesis. Our reference point mainly was the blastocyst stage in both human and mouse, but we also examined zygotic genome activation as well as binary expression differences in fully differentiated adult tissues. Blue lines indicate quantitative comparisons, i.e., differences at expression levels, while red lines indicate qualitative comparisons, i.e., genes expressed or not (on or off) among tissues
