Strains were grown using BRN-RF10 medium without added sodium formate and sodium acetate at 37 °C with 1% (v/v) supplementation of each substrate, as listed in the legend. CO2/H2 was used for the positive control. CO2/H2 with ‘BRN+’ (i.e. with sodium formate and sodium acetate added) was used to show growth in basal BRN-RF10 medium.
