Rebuilding a sea star
Paola Oliveri and colleagues identify the origin and differentiation of cells involved in skeletal regeneration in the echinoderm brittle star Amphiura filiformis.
A chemosynthetic symbiosis in a sea anemone
Shana Goffredi and colleagues identify a deep-sea anemone in a symbiotic relationship with chemosynthetic bacteria, allowing them to harness inorganic energy sources from hydrothermal vents.
Regulation of ammonia transporters
Cheng-Hsun Ho and colleagues examine the regulation of ammonium transport in plants, finding that feedback inhibition of ammonium transporters is mediated by the protein kinase CIPK15 via phosphorylation of residues in the C-terminus
Identyfying cell subtypes via methylation
Wolfgang Wagner and colleagues show that cell subtypes in tissue can be identified via a DNA methylation analyis at cell type-specific CpG sites.
Call for papers: Research Synthesis and Meta-research in Biology
We’re inviting submissions to our new Series guest edited by Shinichi Nakagawa, Julia Koricheva, Malcolm Macleod and Wolfgang Viechtbauer.

BMC Biology is recruiting new Guest Editors
We are looking for Guest Editors for our upcoming article Collections in the fields of cell biology, neuroscience and plant pathology. If you are interested in becoming a Guest Editor please see this page.
Portable peer review
BMC Biology supports portable peer review by sharing reviews and evaluating papers based on existing reports. Learn more here.
BMC Biology is accepting submissions directly from bioRxiv. Please see here for more information.
COVID-19 and impact on peer reviewAs a result of the significant disruption that is being caused by the COVID-19 pandemic we are very aware that many researchers will have difficulty in meeting the timelines associated with our peer review process during normal times. Please do let us know if you need additional time. Our systems will continue to remind you of the original timelines but we intend to be highly flexible at this time.
